George Long had this building constructed in 1950 to house his variety store.  In 1963 Gene and Vernell McCalla purchased the variety store from Buddy Spicer who had bought out Mr. Long three months earlier.  In 1974 the McCalla's enlarged the store renaming it "McCalla's Department Store".  They remained in business until February 1989.  The Schleicher County Commissioners Court bought the building, housing a county youth center for a short time.  In 1991 the building was remodeled to accommodate the library and county extension offices.  The contractor for the remodeling was Bennie Logan.
