The first jail built in Eldorado was in 1906.  It was made from local limestone rocks found five or six miles from Eldorado.  This building is a second empire structure with conor quions and walls of rock-forced course ashlar.  Bonds were approved and accepted August 15, 1905.  T.S. Hodges was the contractor with a bid of $8,750.

Many sheriffs or deputies lived in the jail during their term of office.  Duge McDonald was the only child born in the jail when her father, "Pomp" Watson served as Deputy Sheriff.  Orval Edmiston and his family lived in the building twenty-four years while he served as sheriff of Schleicher County.

The old jail still has the hanging gallows even though no one was ever hanged.

the building received an official Texas Historical Marker.  It now serves as offices for the Schleicher County Appraisal District.

This is the oldest county structure of significance in Eldorado.  It is very important to restore this building for our future.
